Comments

"2151.2 AR dirham, Georgian issue, cross at bottom of reverse field legend, after wahid

S [Scare]"

All were struck in Tiflis under Demetre II of Georgia. There are variations of obverse and reverse dies.

These are easily distinguished from other Arghun coinage by the presence of a Christian cross within the square.  However, they often suffer from blundered dates and months.  There are three main variations:

  • The third line in Uighur spelling “Arghun” is instead spelt as “Arghunun”.
  • The presence of three dots after Arghun's name
  • The presence of the cross not at the bottom center of the coin, but instead to the left of Arghun's name.

There are other, minor variations:

  • To the left of the cross there may be:
    • A six pointed star
    • An eight pointed star
    • A ornament
    • Zarb Tiflis/Struck in Tiflis sometimes replaces the name of the month
