Coin 5 of 5: The 19th and 20th centuries
are represented by a 19th century Manx lifeboat going to the aid of a ship in distress. A portrait of Sir William Hillary is inset. The lifeboat movement had its beginnings in the Isle of Man. Sir William Hillary founded the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the world's premier life-saving organisation for shipwrecked mariners, and in 1832 he built the tower of Refuge which is such a prominent landmark in Douglas Bay.
