According to the accompanying Certificates of Authenticity, the release was officially authorized by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), had a mintage of 100,000 and that the coins are not legal tender in the issuing countries - with the exception of the US dollar. Once that became known, they were removed from the Standard Catalog of World Coins and moved to Unusual World Coins.

The set was distributed by the Calhoun's Collectors Society - a mail-order company that existed in the 1970s-80s in Minneapolis/Edina, MN (USA) that sold coins, stamps, and various other collectibles, including stamps, coins, etc. The company went out of business due to numerous legal problems in 1984 - the year the set was released.
