Comments

The Cynara is a two-masted, gaff-rigged classic wooden sailing gaff ketch. Gaff is a four cornered sail with a peak, throat, tack and clew held aloft by an aerial spar called a gaff while Ketch is a two masted sailing yacht with a mainmast and a shorter mizzen mast located forward of the rudder post. The Cynara features five sails, including a flying jib. She was built at the Camper & Nicholsons shipyard in Gosport, Southampton, England and first launched in 1927.

The Cynara is one of the last great pre-war cruising yachts and was designed as an auxiliary ketch by Charles Nicholson, one of the most famous yacht designers of the first half of the twentieth century. Nicholson designed both racing and cruising boats, and Cynara was designed to be a fast cruising yacht with a relatively shoal draft that could sail into shallow estuaries and anchor close to the coastline. She is now currently undergoing restoration to her former glory.
