William II acceded to the throne of the Netherlands in 1840 after the abdication of his father. Although a conservative, he showed moderation and granted a new, more liberal Constitution in 1848, after being scared of the revolutions that broke out all over Europe. This Constitution is still largely in force today. The banknote presents Guillaume II on his horse at the battle of Waterloo extracted from an oil on canvas painted by Nicaise De Keyser (1813-1887), Belgian painter, in 1846.
