Comments

Mercier was an important pillar of the Belgian resistance to German occupation; with his open letters directed against the occupation and criticizing the behavior of the occupation troops, he brought the occupation authorities against him. His high position and international reputation protected the cardinal from sanctions. This medal portrays the unrealizable dream of the German occupying authorities in Belgium.
