Al-Malik an-Nasir Nasir ad-Din Muhammad ibn Qalawun, commonly known as an-Nasir Muhammad, or by his kunya :Abu al-Ma'ali or Ibn Qalawun (1285-1341) was the ninth Mamluk Turkish sultan of Egypt who reigned for three reigns: December 1293-December 1299-1309 and 1310 until his death in 1341.
History :The 49 sultans of the Mamluk dynasty ruled Egypt, Syria and Arabia from Cairo from 1250 to 1517, after the assassination ofSaladin, al-Mu'adham, until the victory of the Ottoman Turk Selim I in 1516 at Marj Dabiq against the penultimate Mamluk sultan, Al-Ashraf Qânsûh al-Ghûri.
The rise to power of the Mamluks of Cairo was triggered by three major events:- the Seventh Crusade, which saw the King of France take Damietta in person (June 1249), giving the Mamelukes the opportunity to assert themselves against the weakened power of Sultan Ayyoub;- recurrent victories against the Mongols, who had been driven out of Syria several times;- the many victories ofBaybars against the last French positions in the Near East (Caesarea, 1261; Templar fortress, 1266; Jaffa, 1268; Antioch, 1268;Krak des Chevaliers, 1271), against the Assassin sect (1272), and against Little Armenia (sacking of Sis and Ayas, 1266; Tarsus, 1275).
