Comments

Around 1880, France entered the Sudan after strong resistance from the local populations and in 1898 delimited its new territory, the French Sudan.
In 1903, certain territories of Sudan were annexed to Senegal under the name of Senegambia and Niger, transformed in 1904 into Upper Senegal and Niger. This denomination was again changed in 1920 to French Sudan again, and in 1960, to Mali.
Kayes is located in the Upper Senegal Basin, in present-day Mali. The only numismatic specimens minted with the name Upper Senegal and Niger are the emergency coins described below.
