The Cutty Sark was a British Clipper built on the River Clyde in 1869. It was one of last tea clippers to be built and had the distinction of being one of the fastest. This was the pinnacle of years of development in clipper ship design and represents the end of sail power, soon replaced by the dominance of steam propulsion. The Cutty Sark is listed by the National Historic Ships as part of the National Historic Fleet and is one of only three remaining clippers from the 19th Century to have a composite wooden hull on iron frame construction. The clipper was named after the poem Tam O'Shanter, published in 1791 by the famous Robert Burns.

The Cutty Sark was launched on the 22 November 1869 and destined for the tea trade. She participated in an intensely competitive race across the globe from China to England, with a route that crossed the Indian Ocean and rounded the Cape of Good Hope. The ship was recorded to have completed eight tea seasons from England to China and back.

This silver coin is finished in reverse-frosted and minted on behalf of the British Indian Ocean Territory by the Pobjoy Mint.
