Comments

This coin was issued during the Liberal Triennium or Constitutional Triennium, a period in contemporary Spanish history spanning from 1820 to 1823. It constitutes the middle stage of the three conventionally divided periods of Ferdinand VII's reign, following the Absolutist Six-Year Period (1814-1820) and preceding the Ominous Decade (1823-1833). The Triennium began on January 1, 1820, with Riego's uprising, which forced the absolute monarch Ferdinand VII to reinstate the Constitution of Cádiz of 1812 on March 9. This revolutionary period ultimately triggered a royalist reaction and the occupation of Spain by the French army of the Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis, who crossed the Pyrenees on April 7, 1823. It ended on October 1, 1823, when King Ferdinand VII dissolved the Cortes (Parliament), abolished the Constitution, and restored the absolute monarchy.
