The Antwerp Carnival Committee (A.K.K.), under the inspiring leadership of Jackie Moonen, had conceived the plan to issue fifteen medals starting in 1981, whose subject matter would appeal to many collectors. The proceeds would immediately enable the "committee" to finance its carnival activities. Specifically, the choice was made for medals with a – albeit fictitious – nominal value, and given that this issue was intended to provide a source of income for the "Stoet der Stoeten," the largest carnival parade in Antwerp, it is not surprising that the parade was chosen as the "currency." Ultimately, seven medals were minted. © Joris Frederickx
