With well over 200 varieties, these tokens were used to prevent the use of slugs in pay telephones between 1907 - 1944 in the Chicago area by using a unique shape that corresponded with an attachment over the coin slot that admitted tokens only of that shape. These tokens were purchased from the merchant, store, cigar shop, etc. on whose property the telephone was located.
