Obverse

The design depicts the tower of University of Coimbra and a visual composition of triangles representing the roofs of the university of Coimbra, the highest is of the Joanina Library within the lettering ‘UNIVERSIDADE DE COIMBRA 730 ANOS PORTUGAL 2020’ (English – UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA 730 YEARS PORTUGAL 2020).
The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Scientiae Thesaurus Mirabilis is the name of the document signed by the King Dinis I, in 1290, and recognized by Pope Nicholas IV that same year, which created the General Studies and gave rise to the University of Coimbra, responsible, over time, for the national elites and the evolution and consolidation of scientific culture in Portugal, Europe and the world.
To mark this important historical landmark, the Casa da Moeda minted a coin by the sculptor José João de Brito.
