Struck in 1850
While chasing a blockade runner off Vera Cruz on Dec. 8, 1846, the brig "U.S.S. Somers" capsized and foundered. Of the crew, 32 died, seven were rescued. On March 3, 1847, Congress authorized medals to be struck to present to those who participated in life-saving efforts.
