Comments

The Dragon Dollar Restrikes silver round series was minted by the Shanghai Mint between 2018 and 2012, consisting of eight designs based on rare and valuable Chinese Dragon dollar coins from the 19th and 20th Century. These rounds had the year of issue, weight and purity laser-etched on the edge, the first time a Chinese mint had done this. The Hu Poo Dragon is the fifth issue of the series.

The China Pattern Tael struck in silver was issued by the Hu Poo Board of Revenue during the reign of Emperor Guangxu in 1903. The original dies were ordered from the Osaka Mint in Japan under the supervision of Robert Hart. Hart was the Inspector General of the Maritime Customs. The coins were to be minted at the Tientsin Mint with the goal of unifying the multitude of Chinese coinage under the goal standard. This was not successful and the new coinage never went into full production.
