Comments
These are the last coins issued by the Count and Prince Michel I of Gruyère, in an attempt to repay his debts to the cantons of Bern and Fribourg. This attempt failed and the county was divided between the two creditors in 1555. This division had been predicted by the count's jester in these terms: "Fol, if you continue to spend like this, the bear of Berne will eat the crane in the cauldron of Fribourg!"
