Comments

This reverse design by Christopher Ironside, together with the Arnold Machin second portrait of Her Majesty on the obverse, was first issued in 1969 in copper-nickel to replace the 10-shilling banknote as part of the decimalisation process. The coin was re-issued in 2009 with Ian Rank Broadley's fourth portrait as part of the 16-piece sets to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 50 pence denomination.

This 2019 issue features Jody Clark's fifth obverse portrait and forms part of the 5-coin British Culture Set celebrating 50 years of the 50p it was available in Proof sets on 14/1/2019 (issue limit: 3,500) as well as in a Brilliant Uncirculated Set issued on 25/03/2019 (31,250 sales) and available to third parties as BU individually (53,438 sales). This design was also struck in silver proof, silver piedfort, gold proof and gold piedfort.

Christopher Ironside designed all six new denominations for decimalisation for which he was awarded the OBE in 1971.
