First issued in 2009 with Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew.

This 2019 issue features Jody Clark's fifth obverse portrait and forms part of the 5-coin British Culture Set celebrating 50 years of the 50p it was available in Proof sets on 14/1/2019 (issue limit: 3,500) as well as in a Brilliant Uncirculated Set on 25/03/2019(31,250 sales) and available to third parties as BU individually (53,431 sales). This design was also struck in silver proof, silver piedfort, gold proof and gold piedfort.
