Comments
This coin was equivalent to the previous 8 Escudos coin. It was only minted in Madrid in 1810 and 1812. Joseph I introduced the valuation of gold and silver in reales. His bust faced left instead of right, as all previous Spanish monarchs had done. These innovations were presented as those of a change of dynasty so as not to affect the international prestige of the Spanish coins, and to avoid introducing the decimal system, which was used in other countries occupied by Napoleon.
