Series: Proto Boar
Boar right, solid legs, pincer-like feet, curly tail, spear in shoulder (with fork at top and pellets between forks). Large solar rosette (anemone) and spiral (ragged cross, swastika) above. Serpent (reversed S) below. 'Bat' in front. annulet behind.
Horse left, mane of S-shapes, forelock, corded (braided) tail, one or both forelegs and one rear leg bifurcated. Large pelletal sun (large ring of pellets with central pellet-in-ring). Annulets above head, above tail and below horse, either all with central pellet or without. Sometimes teardrop in front of head. Pellet line in exergue, sometimes long and curved.
Allen Type: Coritani F (DF Allen, “Coins of the Coritani”, SCBI 3, 1963).
Van Arsdell Classification: Corieltauvian B, Uninscribed Silver Coinages, Hosidius Type. This is the earliest extant Corieltauvian type because it conforms closest to the denarii of C. f. Hosidius Geta, where the reversed S is a dog. A large die-break is often seen in front of the horse's nose. Reverse adapted from VA 80 - 01. VA 855 - 03: Reversed S below boar. Ring below horse, ring and an elongated ring above horse's head.
Leins Type: Uninscribed 1b (BNJ 2007, p.43-6).

Type 1a (VA 855-03; BMC 3194-5): 24 in the CCI (6 obverse, 7 reverse dies). Teardrop in front of horse's head; three annulets without pellets around; straight, short exergual pellet line. A large flaw develops below the horse's head. Chris Rudd List 184, 9 August 2022, lot 20.
