Comments

Coin issued to mark Luxembourg's millennium in 1963, published by BIL (Banque internationale à Luxembourg) and minted at the Monnaie de Bruxelles workshop.
Minted in 9,000 copies, including 1,000 pieces in patinated condition.
This coin exists with the edge in positions A and B.

The right-hand side shows a reproduction of Countess Ermesinde as depicted on her seal appended to the letter of franchise she issued to the city of Luxembourg in 1244 (Weiller, p. 142). Ermesinde's denarius, minted around 1239-1247, depicted the countess for the first time in this way.
(For further information on the Ermesinde seal, see Bernays and Vannerus pp 30-32).
