William I was the son of Jean II d'Avesnes, count of Hainaut, and Philippine, daughter of the Count Henry II of Luxembourg. He married in 1305 Jeanne de Valois, daughter of Charles I of Valois. He died in 1337 and his son William II took over. (Source : www.cgb.fr)
