The Mona Lisa (Italian: La Gioconda or Mona Lisa ), or Portrait of Mona Lisa, is a painting by Leonardo da Vinci, created between 1503 and 1506, or between 1513 and 1516, and possibly as late as 1517 (the artist died onMay 2, 1519), depicts a half-body portrait of the Florentine Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo. Most probably acquired by Francis I, this 79 × 53 cm oil painting on poplar panel is now on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The Mona Lisa is one of the few paintings definitively attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.
The Mona Lisa is a portrait of a young woman, set against a mountainous landscape with distant, misty horizons. She is depicted in a three-quarter view, up to her waist, including her arms and hands, looking at the viewer - a relatively new feature for the time, and a departure from the usual portraits, which cut off the bust at shoulder or chest level, and are entirely in profile.
