Comments

During World War II, racist politicians in British Columbia were worried that people of Japanese descent living on the Pacific coast would somehow be inspired by their proximity to Japan and begin committing acts of disobedience and terror. So, thousands of Japanese-Canadians had all their belongings confiscated and were shipped from coastal British Columbia to the rest of Western Canada. A particularly large concentration was deported to southern Alberta, and most stayed there once the war ended. Lethbridge's Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, which opened in 1967, is one of many examples of southern Alberta's connection to Japan.
