The Russian (and Soviet) catalogs list the composition as Copper-zinc alloy.
According to official technical specifications, alloy of this coin is brass ЛМц 58-2 (58% Cu, 40% Zn, 2% Mn).

Varieties are known in many years. For example, large and small design varieties exist in 1981-1984. Identified by spacing between design elements and rim, most visible on the obverse. 1980 specimens have been found with the small design. 1985 specimens have been found with the large design.
