The East Africa Protectorate was formed in 1895 covering the territories controlled by the Imperial British East Africa Co. (IBEAC) following the 1885 Berlin Conference that divided Africa among the European powers and allocated Uganda and Kenya to Great Britain.
The Protectorate replaced Rupees and Annas issued by IBEAC from Mombasa with bronze Pice struck at Bombay using die from London in 1897, 1898 and 1899. 1 Pice was worth ¼ Anna and 1 Anna was 1/16th of a Rupee, therefore 1 Pice was 1/64th of a Rupee.
From 1897 when 1 Pice was introduced to 1920 when currency system was changed to Florin, the Rupee remained the currency of the Protectorate. Coins denominated in Cents, introduced in 1906, were also under the Rupee system and formed 1/100th of a Rupee.
It is interesting that The Colonial Reports – Annual (No 635) for East Africa Protectorate (for 1908 – 9) presented to both Houses of the British parliament, while discussing coins in circulation, states on page 8, “…there were Rs. 2,72,543 worth of 1 pice pieces….., which will in due course be demonetized”.
