Unabridged legend: République Française
The coin specifically commemorates the role of Léon, Second-Master of the Commando Kieffer, one of the 177 Frenchmen who took part in the Normandy landings. After fighting in Normandy, Léon went on to take part in operations in the Netherlands, including the Walcheren landing and the capture of Vlissingen. His unit continued to take part in raids and operations right up to the end of the war, being in the Netherlands at the time of the German surrender.
