Weight typically varies between 18-22 g. Usually in red copper color, but can sometimes be found in darker colors, so the only way to safely differentiate from the magnetic lohiya Paisa is with a strong magnet.
These can sometimes be found with countermarks, which are thought to be applied later.
RGV notes “Fine copper, non-magnetic, pieces, usually roughly rectangular in shape, the heavier pieces c.30 mm x 25 mm, the lighter pieces c. 20 mm x 15 mm, with the narrow ends slightly rounded. The surface can be either smooth or rough. Mainly exported to India via Butwal, these pieces circulated extensively in the area around Gorakhpur. They were manufactured in the Palpa district, Baglung and Beni area, and perhaps also in other places.”
Regarding the dating of these, RGV gives the range of “c.18th century - 1880”, however, this is a guess, and the exact range of years is not known.
