#14  2005 $20 Type I (short hair lock)  😁

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

This piece had been minted and stockpiled to replace #11.  The move up indeed happened in 2005, so these pieces were promptly put into RCO hands via the exchange program, where the old $10 base pieces were traded for the $20 base pieces plus a small re-minting fee.  The volume of exchanges was seriously underestimated and the stock of #14 was quickly depleted and the die worn out pumping out more.  There was a delay in exchanges until the new die (#15) was ready.

Many, many thousands of these pieces were minted.

#15  2005 $20 Type II (long hair lock) 😁

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

Major differences between #14 & #15 are the hair-lock above the T in TRUST, the size of the ear and the closeness to the rim of the crown tips.  Click here for a close up photo of the differences.

Many, many thousands of these pieces were minted.
