Comments

This medal is the fifteenth out of a series of sixteen. It bears the fourteenth out of the fifteen stanzas of the “ Wilhelmus”, the Dutch national hymn on the obverse, and the name and coat of arms of a descendant of the Dutch royal family on the reverse, in this case Princess Irene.

Together, the first letters of the fifteen couplets of the Dutch national hymn spell: WILLEM VAN NASSAV, which is another name for William of Orange.

The first medal in the series bears the portrait of William the Silent or William the Taciturn, more commonly known in the Netherlands as William of Orange. He was the leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish Habsburgs that set off the Eighty Years' War and resulted in the formal independence of the United Provinces in 1648.
