François de Vaudémont's son Charles IV married Nicole, Duchess of Lorraine, but on November 26, 1625, François had the States assembled in Nancy declare him Duke according to the law of male heredity. A few days later, he abdicated in favor of his son, but retained the right to mint coins at the same time as his son.
