Libertas Americana
Series: Major landmarks in the history of Humanity
France, symbolized by Minerva, helmeted and armed with a spear, protecting the young America from the British leopard, thanks to her shield adorned with three lilies, in the guise of the infant Hercules, seated in his swaddling clothes on a shield (representing the military origins of the new nation), smothering two snakes, referring to the victories won over the armies of generals Burgoyne at Saratoga and Cornwallis at Yorktown.
The legend is taken from Book III of Horace's Odes.
