Bertha was the widow of Duke Matthew I (died 1176), the mother of Duke Simon II who succeeded him, and the sister of Frederick Barbarossa. deSaulcy speculated that the coin was struck while she served as regent during Simon's accompanying Frederick on the third crusade.
