In 1984 in Los Angeles, rhythmic gymnastics, still reserved for women today, made its Olympic debut with an individual event. Twelve years later, in Atlanta in 1996, an ensemble event was added to the program.
Rhythmic gymnastics is a combination of classical and artistic gymnastics, involving the use of four dexterous apparatus: hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon.
