José Venustiano Carranza de la Garza (29 Dec 1859–21 May 1920) was a wealthy land owner in Coahuila who marched to Mexico City with Francisco Madero, for which he was awarded the governorship of Coahuila. Following the assassination of Madero, Carranza rose up against his usurper, eventually rising to the top of the bloody civil war that followed. He was elected as the first post-revolutionary President of Mexico and was assassinated in 1920.
