Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (8 May 1753–30 July 1811) was a Catholic priest and the first leader of the Mexican Independence movement. He was a tireless champion of the poor and, in 1810, gave the Cry of Dolores in his morning mass, causing his parish to rise up in arms. In 1811 he, along with other insurgent leaders, were betrayed, captured, executed, and beheaded by the colonial authorities.

José María Morelos y Pavón (30 Sept 1765 - 22 Dec 1815) was a priest who assumed leadership of the independence movement after the execution of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in 1811. Under Morelos, the Congress of Anáhuac was installed on September 13, 1813 which declared the country's independence on November 6, and on October 22, 1814, drafted a constitution which declared that Mexico would be a Republic. He was captured, defrocked, and executed in 1815.

La Campana de Dolores (the Bell of Dolores) was the bell rung by Miguel Hidalgo on 16 December 1810 to rouse the people of Dolores to arms against the colonial Spanish government.
