Joseph was named King of Naples on March 30, 1806, to replace Ferdinand IV of Bourbon (brother of Charles IV of Spain), who had been stripped of his title for supporting Austria in the Third Coalition. Joseph was officially King of Naples and the Two Sicilies, but Ferdinand IV, who had taken refuge there, was master of the island of Sicily.
On June 6, 1808, by imperial decree, he had to abandon Naples, which he had loved so much.
He had just been appointed King of Spain and India. In the Neapolitan system, the silver piaster was worth 6 Tari or 12 carlini or, as shown on this type, 120 grana, while the ducato was worth only 100 grana.
