A bronze medal commemorating the Patriotic War of 1812 was established on August 30, 1814, to reward the "fathers and elders" of noble families and "having excellent and important merit" merchants. Nobles wore a medal on the ribbon of the Order of St. Vladimir, merchants - on the ribbon of the Order of St. Anne. The nobility was allowed to keep the medal from the descendants, however, without the right to wear it by the descendants.
