Comments

Coin commemorating the hundredth anniversary of GAMBETTA's death.

After the fall of Napoleon III, Gambetta played an important role with Jules Ferry in the advent of the Third Republic, proclaimed on September 4, 1870. In October, as Minister of the Interior in the government of National Defense, he left Paris by balloon for Tours to organize the raising of troops.
During the 1870 war, Paris found itself surrounded.
Gas balloons with gondolas were used to transport civilian and military mail, passengers and carrier pigeons. They were inflated with highly flammable lighting gas. Departures were made by day and night, under barrage from Prussian troops.

Painting by Jules Didier and Jacques Guiaud depicting the departure, on October 7, 1870, of the "George Sand" and the "Armand Barbès", carrying Gambetta.
